Guidelines for making the most of your people

Reward and Recognition

Keeping your employees happy and satisfied helps staff retention. As well as communicating how valuable they are to your business, your employees will also be motivated by incentive and reward schemes. Pay is not the only way to reward good performance. Consider increased development opportunities and special recognition awards. If you wish to maintain a high level of motivation and enthusiasm it is important to focus upon the achievements, the successes and any good news.

There are a number of different ways in which workers can be shown that their contributions and achievements are being recognised:

  • Special recognition awards: this may consist of certificates, prizes, shopping vouchers, gifts, trophies
  • Promotion schemes: employees should be made aware of the realistic possibility of promotion within the company
  • Learning and development: Offer learning and development opportunities to develop skills and realise potential of those employees who perform well, increasing chances of promotion.
  • Presentation events: this could be as a result of generating improvement or innovative ideas, achievement of a qualification or completion of an apprenticeship. Some organisations have special presentation events for this purpose
  • Team recognition : this could be for recognising overall team performance and include a free meal out, bowling night etc. which also helps team building
  • Performance- related pay and bonuses: bonuses, provided at a set time of year such a Christmas, are an excellent way to motivate staff
  • Company’s performance: it is important that employees are aware of the company’s performance and each individual should feel valued and understand the contribution they have made to the success

If you wish to maintain a high level of motivation, enthusiasm it is important to focus upon the achievements, the successes and any good news.

But don’t forget. Sometimes all someone wants is a simple ‘thank you’!!
